In this study, respondent-driven sampling was used to recruit Burmese refugees in Milwaukee and examine their fish consumption habits, and awareness of fish advisories. The study found that Burmese refugees, especially women of childbearing age (WCBA), frequently consumed sport-caught fish, yet the majority were unaware of fish consumption advisories for Wisconsin and Milwaukee.
Study participants consumed an average of 64.1 meals containing fish annually, with 40.2 of those being sport-caught fish, which is linked to a higher risk of exposure to contaminants compared to other sources of fish. Limited economic resources and low education levels likely contributed to the higher reliance on sportfish as a food source. The study highlighted the need for targeted health education efforts to promote safe fish consumption practices, particularly among WCBA, to reduce exposure to contaminants.
